Precious Palin

Sarah Palin couldn't wait to express her shock Obama made a thoughtless "remark about our world’s most precious and unique people." And she does so hope that "President Obama’s comments do not reflect how he truly feels about the special needs community."

This shortly after she decided it suited her political purposes to reject part of the stimulus money. The funding she is refusing in part "would pay for educational programs to help economically disadvantaged and special needs students." I couldn't find a link but word has it she also came out against funding Special Olympics while she was campaigning last year.

Clearly she's joining the other stim rejecting, wingnut governors in positioning herself for another national run. A theory reinforced by this interesting Conde Nast piece that didn't receive enough attention. Seems she killed any chance of that fabled Alaska pipeline by playing politics with the contracts. Her theatrics are not sitting well with the natives.

She didn't cut Special Olympics funding, she increased it:

Also, she didn't "reject" stimulus money for education. She just referred the issue to the legislature, because the state will be left holding the bag for those programs once the stimulus money runs out.

VO, you really need to get your *news* from more places than Fox.

Going by the news report the blog you liked to is based on, my understanding is that she has declined money that comes with certain strings.
Specifically, strings that require permanent changes to Alaskan programs to get a temporary source of income, which would leave the costs of maintaining the programs in her lap.
I do not know enough about the bill to know how accurate her assessment is, but on the face of it that is a legit reason for concern.

'Giving' federal funds to states with attached requirements has been a favorite means of getting around the tenth for a long time.

OMR that's a bogus excuse all the GOP 2012 hopefuls are using to justify this grandstanding. It's my understanding, based on weeks worth of articles, that none of these 'strings' are permanent. Nothing prevents the states from sunseting the programs when the funding runs out.

The scam here is the govs get to make big media points about *fighting* big gov, when they know the legislatures have the ability to accept the money without their authorization. You wait and see if all the states that are *refusing* the funds don't end up taking all the money.

This is as phony as Palin's claim she said no to the bridge to nowhere.

Libby, can you point me in the direction of some of these articles? Would like to track this one back to something substantive. Right now I am just going off the surface of things.
